2.Switch one light on for sometime, and switchoff & switchon another one. Go in to the room and see the warmth of the off bulb. The warm one is connected to the first switch, the on bulb is connected to the second. And naturally the third without warmth is...

there is another solution which give us more apples :

first , make 3 trips along 334 mile to point X. That give us 1998 apples in X. From X make two trips along 499 miles .This give us 1000 apples in point Y which is 167 miles from B. 1000 - 167 = 833 apples in B which is a little greater than 800 :)
